  * BIOSERVE - BIOSCIence File Server: BIOSERVE@UMDCC is a network file
server for the BIOSCIence area. Currently BIOTECH and SEQNET bulletins are
stored. Future changes and additions to the server will be announced in
the BIOTECH bulletin board. The server accepts both interactive message
requests and mail requests. In mail requests the command must appear in
the "Subject:" portion of the header. Commands are:

         HELP sends you help
LIST sends you a catalog of BIOSERVE files
         SEND sends you a file.

For a more detailed description of BIOSERVE and its commands send BIOSERVE
the HELP command. More in-depth coverage will be provided in the next
  NetMonth.

  * An interesting new server is available, ISERVE@UWAEE. The database
system it accesses is called ISAAC, Information System for Advanced
Academic Computing. ISAAC is a free, computer-based system devoted to
information about the use of IBM computers and compatible software in
higher education and research. All students, faculty and staff at
institutions of higher education and members of participating societies are
  eligible to use ISAAC.

ISAAC may be accessed in two ways. The first is the usual interactive
message sent to ISERVE (note that the server does not accept commands via
mail). The second method is with a PC and a modem. When you use ISAAC by
modem, you will actually log on a mainframe computer at the University of
Washington in Seattle. If you choose modem access, the ISAAC staff will
send you the communication and terminal emulation software you'll need.
ISAAC's toll-free number operates in the United States (except Washington
State) and Puerto Rico, so prospective users outside that area should
  consider trying BITNET access.

You must be registered before you can access ISAAC in either way. Send the
following information to ISAAC@UWAEE. User materials will be mailed to
  you.

      (1) Name
      (2) Address, City, State, Zip
      (3) Phone: (w) Please include area code.
      (4) University
      (5) Your BITNET address
      (6) You may connect to ISAAC in two ways. Each method requires separate
authorization. Please indicate which method(s) you would like to
use. If you choose modem access, the communications software you'll
need will be sent to you.

If you would like more details about the services ISAAC offers, send mail
to ISAAC@UWAEE. The services will be reviewed in-depth in the next
  NetMonth.

  * Please remember that when subscribing to a Listserv list, you should send
your mail/message SUB command to LISTSERV@NODENAME, not to the listname.
For example, to subscribe to ETHICS-L, you would send the command "SUB
ETHICS-L your_name" to LISTSERV@MARIST. Sending the command by message to
ETHICS-L@MARIST accomplishes nothing. However, sending the command to
ETHICS-L by MAIL will send your subscription request to every member of the
list. This is (to say the least) annoying and wasteful. These guidelines
also hold true for UNSUBing from lists.
