  * No real news this week, just a warning:

Floating about the network of late has been CONVO EXEC, an Anti-Relay.
This primitive conference machine has recently been run at PUCC and YALEVM
(among other nodes). Please remember that machines such as CONVO are a
burden on network message traffic. They circumvent the Relay system, which
is designed to balance file and message queues.

We encourage you to STAY AWAY from CONVO, wherever it is running. If you
are feeling particularly helpful and you see CONVO someplace, you may want
to mention it to the Inforep or operator at that node. While running a
single-node conference machine is NOT against any specific BITNET
guidelines, it IS often harmful. They have been banned at some nodes.

CONVO was the brainchild of some Relay-abusers. After being locked out of
Relay several times, they decided to create a conference machine of their
their own. The code has two particularly distasteful features:

  1. Hardcoded into the program are the names of Relay Operators and local
staff members. Rather than respond to /slash commands from these people
with instructions, it sends a *GONE message.

  2. The program has a command to send the user a copy of CONVO EXEC. This
promotes the running of CONVO around the network, and often puts it in the
hands of those who shouldn't have it.

  * Next week the February NetMonth will be distributed, so there will be no
NetWeek. Those of you who are planning to contribute, please remember that
the deadline is February 17th. That's Wednesday, folks!
